Book Review: Gravitational Marketing
Recently, I was introduced to the phrase “same is lame.” The idea is that more and more people are just copying what they see happening around them.
They’re running their businesses without any innovative thought or creative ideas — and they wonder why they aren’t becoming an overnight success story.
Perhaps because they are lame…or, maybe they just don’t know any better.
Well, Jimmy Vee & Travis Miller are the cure from the common business. I first heard the phrase “same is lame” from them. Wish I could take credit for it, but I can’t. They are also the authors of Gravitational Marketing: The Science of Attracting Customers.
Jimmy and Travis are two successful marketers who are anti-marketing. To clarify, they don’t believe in traditional marketing efforts as a way to gain customers and build profit centers. This dynamic thirty-something duo walks the talk – they have turned an initial $200 investment into a multi-million dollar empire. Actually it was less than $200 — the guys admitted to me that had to tap into that $200 to get their business phone line set up as well.
Shortly after the book was released, I had the opportunity to sit down with Travis and Jimmy, and they left my head literally spinning with ideas. They are dynamic, creative and genuinely nice guys who use no-nonsense methods to create uncommon results. The GM takes you step-by-step through the process of implementing Gravitational Marketing — and just like the authors, it conveys the process in a straight-shooting, entertaining way. This book is a road map for tapping into what makes you unique. Better still, it shows you how to exploit that knowledge to extract maximum value.
Travis and Jimmy offer a wealth of information on their Gravitational Marketing site — you’ll find tons of articles with tips and strategies that you can implement right away. For those looking for all the benefits of a private consult without the hefty price tag, check out their Entrepreneur’s Guide to the Galaxy. It’s the next best thing to having Jim and Travis sitting in your office with you.
Veteran marketers will find that nearly every “truth” you’ve ever had drilled into you will be challenged in this book, and with good reason. Today’s Internet is not the arena in which you want to be like everyone else. As I mentioned before, this book drives home the point that “same is lame,” and it will yield only mediocre results. To truly succeed, you need to strive to define your individuality, and establish a genuine relationship with your customers.
This book offers a very serious look at marketing, with concepts that even a newbie marketer can follow. It isn’t often that I label a book a “must read,” but this one certainly deserves that moniker.
